Thought For The Day 5th July 2026

Our Gospel reading for this Sunday is both arresting and appealing. Who is not drawn by the words: Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Who is not pulled up short by the claims of Jesus in the words: no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

We are left with a good question: what do I do, on a daily basis, so that I may “shoulder his yoke and learn from” him? Usually it involves a combination three things: practical living of Gospel values; time “wasted” in prayer; time spent reading the Gospel to become familiar “again for the first time” with the person and teaching of Jesus. Perhaps the summer might provide a little more time for these life-giving practices.
